Insomnia - The Lack Of

Ian Russell asks if, as I not have not posted yet, I have cured my insomnia. I am a bit suspicious of the word 'cured' because I used to cherish my insomnia, but the short answer is, yes, my insomnia seems to have gone. This may be something to do with my bold adherence to Nassim Nicholas Taleb's low carb diet. I have not drunk and barely eaten a single gram of carbs for the last two and a half weeks. I am ten pounds lighter and I sleep like a baby - actually, I never understood that expression as babies generally wake up screaming; I've done that in my time but not lately. I am attaining a steady seven and a half hours of unconsciousness nightly. This hasn't happened in at least ten years, possibly more. I have also become optimistic, amiable and energetic. It may not be a good thing, but it's certainly a new thing.

  1. I distrust diets. When I realised something had to be done about my health and eating, I decided on a little of everything, often. A fully balanced intake over 5 small meals a day.
    But most importantly, it was to be permanent. That was four years ago, and still going strong.

    that half hour is important, I guess - but how can you be so accurate? presumably you have a body of bedside technicians monitoring the moment you drop off.

  4. If you miss the slightly bonkers, wired edge of sleep deprivation, you could augment your Taleb diet with some hallucinogens? - that way you get the best of both worlds, health & madness at once.

  5. You seem to be saying you cut out alcohol. How much alcohol were you drinking before you started the low-carb diet? If I may ask. Alcohol definitely disturbs sleep.

  6. Seth, I was drinking perhaps and average of two or three glasses of wine. But that can't be the whole story as I have given up alcohol for months in the past but it has never had such a dramatic effect on my sleep.

  8. Have you ever considered acupuncture for your insomnia? Acupuncture is a wonderful treatment for insomnia that people don't often think about. I've helped a lot of people with insomnia. Often they fall asleep right then during treatment, but they almost always report getting to sleep faster and staying asleep through the night. You should look for a good acupuncturist in your area.

  9. I read a great book called the Great Cholesterol Con and the author suggests that what's really important is not what you eat (although of course it's not unimportant), it's how you eat.
    According to him, the French Paradox, ie the French eating the most saturated fats in Europe and having the lowest rates of heart disease, is actually due to the way thay take the time to shop, prepare food, and eat in a leisurely fashion and with pleasure rather than the red wine they drink.
    So no more eating on the run and enjoy your food!
