Karl Rove: How to be Ugly

I've been cherishing Karl Rove's remark about Obama - 'Even if you never met him, you know this guy. He's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.'  Everybody has commented on this, some pointing out that it's Rove who makes the snide remarks, some making the obvious point that it says more about Rove than Obama. But what does it say about Rove? It says he's ugly, simple as that. He's also clever, fat, bald and he smirks. The smirk is designed to signal that he's happy to be ugly because he's clever. I've known three people exactly like this. They chortle and babble and you don't listen because you're trying not to look at them and you find their manner embarrassing. When you do listen, you realise they are talking nonsense. But, since nobody likes to listen to them, they do very well because, without any evidence, people assume they really are as clever as they say they say are. In Texas an NBC reporter told me Rove was 'a political genius'. I knew at once he hadn't been listening.

  1. Let's remember Rove is the guy who said that George W. Bush was the most charismatic person he'd ever met.

  2. Yeah, but a clever, fat, bald, ugly guy is well-positioned to recognize a clever, good-looking, smoothie utterly stuck on himself and vastly over-rated by his hangers-on. Just remember that, among other things, Obama didn't know the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day, claimed to have campaigned in all 57 states, and thought WWII started in 1941. Add the 180-degree turns on campaign finance, NAFTA and FISA and you know what you have? A political hustler. Just like Karl Rove.

  3. Would you rather have funky German sex with Karl Rove or, say, a tattooed Monica Bellucci? Once we have the answer to that question, sirrah, we will know how to assess the matter of Rove's ugliness.

  4. The funky germanic sex god is smarter than you think Bryan. Obama's a symbol of our best liberal hopes. Whether there's much substance about him or his would-be presidency is completely different. I doubt he will succesfully change the worldview of Harold Pinter and his ilk. By the way elberry, a tattooed Belluci is infinitely preferable. Though on current form I'd rather do Rove than Winehouse.

  5. Spot on, Rowland. John Birt is the same kind of thing
