The Psychotropic Peach 2

As, because of my diet, I am now effectively two-dimensional, I look at this map (thanks to the great Finkelstein blog) with a distinct sneer of superiority. What on earth are they eating in Mississipi where a third of the people are obese? But, equally, what are they eating in Colorado, the only dark green state with a mere 18.4 per cent obesity rate? Mind you, that still sounds pretty high. I would guess Florida is only at 23 per cent because the fatties we send over to Orlando don't stay for long. The big question is: which part of 'carbohydrates make you fat' don't these people understand?

  1. You referred us to a very interesting article the other week about the fallacy of a healthy GDP being an unalloyed good for society. As they authors pointed out, the food industry is worth about 700 billion dollars and 21 billion dollars is spent by the food industry on advertising. So obesity is good for the economy. And that's an end to it, I suppose.

  2. "What on earth are they eating in Mississipi"?

It's all that Mississippi mud pie.

  3. Is this kind of problem really a problem? As evils go, how evil is it? Which is to say, should 'we' actively do anything to try and fix it?

From an historical point of view, the situation whereby the poorest are the fattest is a remarkable success. We haven't just conquered malnutrition and starvation, we've stomped all over it. Our lowest plebs are as fat as Emperors!

Now that anyone can get fat, isn't it just a matter of personal choice as to whether you do or not? (As a concession we can put gastric bands on the ones with genuine disorders.)

  4. Yes indeed, Dick, I gather an 8.5 ounce serving contains 680 calories, 53 per cent of which are carbohydrates which will ensure you will be unable to burn the 288 calories of fat.

  6. Carbohydrates make you fat? Phooey! All the healthiest (and least fattening) diets in the world are carbo-heavy. It's the carbo-fat combo, esp the combo of refined sugars and saturated/trans fats, that do the damage. Such combos occur little in real food, hugely in junk food. The problem is that so many people barely eat real food.

  7. I see that raisins are defined as junk food and thus banned from advertising during children's television shows. The phrase is ancient and over-used, but truly "that way madness lies."

  9. So is Bryan officially a diet snob now or is it all just more literary tone?

  10. I'm a bit late on this one. It should be noted that Italy has the 3rd highest life expectancy in the world and they eat loads of carbs.
