Pontin's!

Good grief! Pontin's still exists. Who knew? I remember TV ads starring Fred Pontin in which he gave us the old two thumbs and said, 'Book early!', meaning, as we, in a more cynical age, know, 'Smooth my cash flow!' The company is doing well out of the recession. At Pontin's these days you can rub shoulders with assorted hedge funders, Damien Hirst, Fred Goodwin, Martin Amis, Jonathan Ross, Dick Fuld and some minor royals. Bernie Madoff wanted to be a bluecoat but was turned down.

  1. While on holiday with a group of lads, we met some girls staying in Pontin's. We bought a day pass and totally wrecked their canoe pond - women and children first! Back at their chalet, we dried our fivers on the window using the girls hairdryers. Happy days, hi-de-hi!

At one time I was involved in the fairly recent refurbishment of three Butlins sites - the shame and the pity brings tears to my eyes.

  2. Wishful thoughts of penniless bankers remind me that another Fred - not exactly a poor man - has been demanding just penalties for bad kings, as the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even. Back in the Daily Politics studio Forsyth proved a formidable ally for Nassim and Nouriel. The two politicians, Tory and Labour, try hard to squirm out, thinking no doubt of all those nice donations past and promised. Well worth watching.
