Seb and Kirsty Miss the Joke

Just now I caught a moment of Sebastian Coe on Desert Island Discs. He was remembering walking to the hall where the host city for the 2012 Olympics was to be announced. His mobile rang, it was the Prime Minister - Blair, but it could just as well have been Brown. Blair asked who had won. Coe said the announcement hadn't been made. Blair said, 'Yes, but who's won?' Neither Coe nor Kirsty Young found this funny, I burst out laughing. Blair's natural assumption was that the whole thing was rigged, that an elite knew something the poor proles didn't. Amazing business, politics, it never does what it says on the tin.

  1. Yes, but Seb Coe's a Tory - and Kirsty Young is a woman. I'm neither of those and I found it funny though not half as funny as the imagine of you laughing, Brian Blessedlike, into the wireless.

Not as funny as Newbold! Dear me, if it ain't a name for the doorstep challenger.

  2. I've come across this mindset from many in the political set. They believe it means they have special powers and insight, that they are important people. This attitude explains quite a bit about their make-up.

The exchange made the Olympic committee look like beacons of rectitude and fair play - quite an achievement.

  3. So, did Seb’s desert island discs include the theme music to 'Chariots of Fire' or any other running related material?

  4. I dunno, Willard, I didn't listen to the rest of it. I had busy work.

  5. And here I was thinking that you'd finished early for Christmas and were eating mince pies whilst wearing your Perry Como festive jumper (with industrial-strength reindeer motif).

Clearly you're not with the right union.

  6. He had the Heather Small song that apparently swung it for London. One of the funniest things I've heard in years - I was in fits - tho I believe it's intended to be serious and sincere and aspirational...
